We asked Fixx athlete Amanda Norton a few questions about her CrossFit journey..
What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
Jason and I started CrossFit way back in 2014 as a workout that we could do together. This was pre-gym. We used to look up the daily WODs online and go to the park playground near our house to do bar work. We eventually found a gym in Nashville that we loved. Fast forward to last July when we moved to Tucson, we landed at FIXX. I always tell everyone — if you are traveling or relocating to a new place, find a CrossFit gym. You will meet the best people. It is a community. Hey, we even found a CrossFit gym in Nicaragua while traveling!
What was your first impression? How has that changed?
Words cannot describe how sore I was after my first actual in gym CrossFit class. Like have to pick up your own legs and roll out of bed sore. I did not think that I could do it long term. Everyone else was so much stronger than me! It was SO challenging. And guess what, it is still challenging but my mindset has shifted. I finally got to a realization that I have to work on my own technique, lift my own weight, listen to my own body and be consistent. I have seen the most growth (and least injuries) since that mindset shift.
What was your first “bright spot”? (Positive moment)
I remember my first 200lb plus lift and everyone cheering me on. That was cool. I also remember ripping the shoulder out of my shirt when reaching for the pepper shaker at dinner one night, and being like damn, time to go shopping! haha. But really, in a culture that puts so much pressure on girls to be tiny and little, being comfortable in my body having muscles and being strong is a definite bright spot. Go ladies go!
What are you working on now?
Kipping pullups and kipping T2B. I have zero rhythm (just ask Jason) so the kips are hard for me.
What is your favorite FIXX memory?
While the Friday Night Lights during the Open were awesome, I am going to have to go with the more recent Memorial Day MURPH workout. That challenge has eluded me for years because I was so intimidated by the workout. It felt great to come in and get it done with an awesome group of athletes.
Do you have a favorite movement? Favorite WOD?
Deadlifts for sure! I loved the 21.2 open workout of DB snatches and burpee box jumps.
