What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
My future husband! He kept inviting me to join him at our local box in Alabama when we were dating. But I didn’t want to change my fitness routine in case things didn’t work out! I finally caved, and I’m glad I did. I’ve been married to CrossFit (and my husband) since 2013!
What was your first impression? How has that changed?
Honestly, my first impression of CrossFit was that I couldn’t do any of this stuff! I didn’t even know how to properly jump rope (some days, it looks like I still don’t). But I just kept showing up. And after having to start from scratch at least four times during the past almost 10 years of calling CrossFit my fitness home (a surgery, a C-section recovery, etc.), I’ve learned nothing works better for me in terms of fitness than what we do here.
What was your first “bright spot”? (Positive moment)
Here at FIXX, my first bright spot was realizing I’d found a box that fit me and my personality. I’d been working out at home since March 2020 due to Covid. One of my best friends in Texas was my accountability partner and we worked out together three to five days a week. When we moved to Tucson in August, I didn’t know anyone. And my motivation to work out in my garage – in the heat and alone – was nonexistent! I found FIXX, and found my motivation again.
What are you working on now?
Breathing! I have exercise-induced asthma and my lungs are still getting used to the dry Tucson air after living in the humidity-saturated states of Alabama and Texas my whole life. I’m trying to focus more on breathing in through my nose, and calming myself mentally when I start to feel like I can’t breathe.
What is your favorite FIXX memory?
It was a big moment for me when I finally completed an RX rope climb in early December! It’s something I’ve been trying to do for years now, but had never quite gotten the proper technique down. I don’t expect to be doing them in WODs anytime soon, but the fact that I’m strong enough to do it at all was a huge boost for me.
Do you have a favorite movement? Favorite WOD?
I love back squats. I used to jokingly say back squats were my love language! I’ll never forget when I finally hit 200 pounds on my one-rep. I’ve lost some strength since that day, but I hope to get it back in the next few months.
