We asked Fixx athlete Kelsey Harshman a few questions about her CrossFit journey..
What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
“I first walked through the doors at CrossFit looking for a gym that would allow me to complete my Olympic lifts as I prepped for the 2020 Olympic Games. I had been in a couple other CrossFit type gyms with Team Canada and knew that was the type of gym I wanted to train in. Somewhere competitive, great culture and surround myself with people who can help me achieve my goals!”
What was your first impression? How has that changed?
“My first impression was what a terrific place to workout. I was able to come in and get my lifts done and get some really great coaching along the way with some of my techniques. Then, I thought to myself I would absolutely love to challenge myself more and join some of their classes on my lighter weeks. My first class I did I thought holy cow these people do some insane movements that I’ve never done before! Now, almost a year later and post Olympic Games, I am glad to say I have jumped on the CrossFit train and do three classes a week! Feeling strong, confident and willing to try all the new movements!”
What was your first “bright spot”? (Positive moment)
“My first bright spot that I can think of is when my mom decided to join the CrossFit family! I was so proud of her for joining and now we do classes together every Monday!”
What are you working on now?
“My goals now are to stay in shape and continue to be able to play softball for the Canadian National team. I really have been diving in to focus on upper body movements. Especially as a softball athlete shoulder care is so important. Brice and the other instructors have been very helpful giving me new exercises and continuing to try new movements that I haven’t done before.”
What is your favorite FIXX memory?
“My favorite FIXX memory has been meeting so many great people and getting after it in the gym with them. I used to think that CrossFit was going to be all about lifting heavier weights than the people next to you BUT at FIXX it’s all about working as a group and finishing the workout that’s on the white board. Cheering each other on and feeling great after we have completed the workout.”
Do you have a favorite movement? Favorite WOD?
“I want to say my favorite movement has become the rower. I’m still working on my technique and getting better every time I get on one. I love that you can control how hard you go on the rower and you are in control of your own destiny!”
