We asked Fixx athlete, Scott Harden, a few questions about his CrossFit journey…
What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
“I made a terrible mistake and asked Dan and Anne Manka “what’s new”. They told me they had just opened a CrossFit gym in the area. I politely congratulated them and said I would check it out at some point. They told me they had a class at 5:30 am on Monday and we all had a good laugh when I told them that I would be there. I think we all knew that I would not. But lo and behold, I did show up-to everyone’s surprise, including my own, and have been showing up ever since.”
What was your first impression? How has that changed?
“I didn’t I didn’t really know what to expect. I just jumped in and did the workouts-bitching about them as I went along. I like the fact that the workouts were different- as I had an old, tired, lifting routine. However, it was the folks at the gym that kept me coming back. I don’t think I have laughed as hard working out as I have at FIXX. The 5:30 am class was a cross between Lord of the Flies and Animal House. Who knew, working out could be that much fun.”
What was your first “bright spot”? (Positive moment)
“My first bright spot was showing up and then continuing to show up. Overall, accomplishing a workout that you didn’t think you possibly could, is always a bright spot.”
What are you working on now?
“Getting back into a more consistent routine and attendance. After taking a break, it’s been a bit of a challenge making it to the gym on a consistent basis.”
What is your favorite FIXX memory?
“There are a ton of favorite FIXX memories: the comedy stylings of Hartman, watching Lisa lift more than all of us, Holly’s expressed contempt for those sandbagging a workout-present company included, Tawnya taking the leap and opening her quilt store, Curtis’ “It’s your workout” mantra, Kyle’s recognition that he lost complete control of 5:30 am class, realizing he was coaching a bunch of jackasses- present company included, Heiselle’s making sure that my spot in the gym is kept open.
I think one of the best memories, which speaks volumes of the gym and the owner, is when during the first few weeks of the Covid-19 lockdown, Brice opened the gym and let the members grab any equipment that they would need to be able to work out while the gym was closed. He didn’t need to do that, but it shows his commitment and dedication to the members of CrossFit FIXX.”
Do you have a favorite movement? Favorite WOD?
“Anything with burpees. Just can’t get enough burpees in my workout. – No, that’s complete BS. I don’t really have a favorite movement- I have a lot of non favorite movements though. I do enjoy the 12 Days of Christmas – as it is a workout on Christmas Eve, every piece of gym equipment is utilized and it just a fun workout, or so that’s what I have been telling myself. “
