Staying Fit on Summer Vacation: Tips for Working Out While Traveling

Summer vacations are a time to relax, explore new places, and indulge in delicious foods. However, it doesn’t mean you have to abandon your fitness routine altogether. With a bit of planning and creativity, you can stay active and maintain your health goals while enjoying your well-deserved break. Here are some practical tips for working out during summer vacations:

Plan Ahead

Before you embark on your trip, research fitness options at your destination. There are lots of CrossFit Affiliates around the world and they will often take drop ins.  Here’s a map you can use to help find one.  If you are going somewhere with cooler temps, look ahead for scenic trails for jogging or hiking, or local parks where you can exercise outdoors. Knowing your options in advance allows you to pack accordingly and set realistic fitness goals for your vacation.

Pack Portable Workout Gear

If you prefer to work out in your hotel room or outdoors, pack lightweight, portable workout gear such as resistance bands, jump ropes, or yoga mats. These items take up minimal space in your luggage and enable you to perform a variety of exercises without access to a gym.

Explore Active Sightseeing

Turn sightseeing into a fitness activity by choosing walking tours, bike rentals, or hiking excursions to explore your destination. Walking or biking allows you to experience the local culture up close while burning calories and staying active. It’s a great way to incorporate exercise into your daily itinerary.

Incorporate Water Activities

If you’re vacationing near the beach, lake, or pool, take advantage of water activities such as swimming, paddleboarding, or kayaking. These activities provide a full-body workout while keeping you cool and refreshed in the summer heat. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen and stay hydrated while enjoying water-based exercises.

Schedule Active Excursions

Look for opportunities to participate in active excursions or sports activities available at your destination. Whether it’s snorkeling, surfing, golfing, or even a local dance class, participating in recreational activities not only keeps you active but also adds a fun and memorable element to your vacation experience.

Stay Hydrated and Eat Well

Maintain a balanced diet and stay hydrated throughout your vacation to support your fitness efforts. Opt for nutritious meals with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Carry a reusable water bottle and drink water regularly, especially in hot climates, to prevent dehydration and support optimal physical performance. But remember, it’s okay to have that ice cream cone…you are on VACATION!

Be Flexible and Enjoy Yourself

Above all, be flexible with your workout routine and enjoy your vacation experience. It’s okay if you can’t stick to your usual workout schedule or if your activities vary each day. The goal is to stay active and maintain a positive mindset towards fitness while allowing yourself to relax and rejuvenate.

Prioritize Rest and Recovery

Incorporate rest days into your vacation schedule to allow your body time to recover from physical activities and travel. Use rest days to explore local culture, relax by the pool, or enjoy leisurely walks without the pressure of a structured workout.

Stay Motivated and Have Fun

Stay motivated by setting realistic fitness goals for your vacation and celebrating your achievements along the way. Whether it’s completing a morning workout routine or trying a new fitness activity, acknowledge your efforts and embrace the journey towards a healthy and active lifestyle.

By following these tips, you can maintain your fitness routine and stay healthy while enjoying a memorable summer vacation. Balancing physical activity with relaxation enhances your overall well-being and ensures you return from your trip feeling refreshed, energized, and ready to tackle your fitness goals with renewed enthusiasm.
